Bishopthorpe, near York: 5-day meet

Updated: Nov 4, 2023

Thursday 13th - Tuesday 18th July 2023

Bishopthorpe is a small village just a short distance from the historic City of York but enjoys a rural feel close to the River Ouse where the riverbank is home to kingfishers, great crested grebes and the patient observer might even catch a glimpse of the Otter.

Sheffield DA invites all members this 5 day meet in the beautiful village of Bishopthorpe, near York. This THS offers a flat field with excellent public transport links to the City of York and beyond. Sustrans York to Selby cycle route passes close to the site on a mainly traffic-free path using the old East Coast Mainline railway trackbed through the Vale of York towards Selby. A perfect route for families and novice cyclists.

The village is home to a small group of shops and pubs. As the village name suggests the grade 1 listed Bishopthorpe Palace is the official residence of the Archbishop of York, with successive occupants in residence since 1241.

The historic City of York almost needs no introduction and extends a welcome with a host of tourist attractions, subject to the restrictions timetable, including Jorvik, Cliffords Tower, York Dungeon, York Minster, National Railway Museum, York Racecourse and so many more. The visitor can walk the historic walls and take in the historic centre including The Shambles, proudly retaining its famous timbered overhanging buildings dating back to the 14th Century.

For an alternative view of the City, why not enjoy the sights from the river. City Cruises York, offer Daytime City Cruises, Lunch and the popular Afternoon Tea Cruises, Early Evening Cruises, Floodlit Cruises and if you are feeling a little more bold, maybe try a self-drive motor boat.

Moving outside the City centre you can shop ‘til you drop at The McArthur Glenn York Designer Outlet, which offers 120 leading brands from Cadburys to Cath Kidston and Tog 24 to Tommy Hilfiger; all less than 10 minutes away from the Bishopthorpe site.

Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial occupies the site of the former RAF Elvington and is well worth a visit. The museum explains, in a realistic way, what life was like on a typical wartime bomber station, as well as displaying the history of aviation in the context of a living memorial to allied air forces personnel, particularly those during the Second World War. The award winning Eden Camp at Malton just a few miles to the north-east offers further insight into British military and social history from 1914 onwards.

Further afield, the stunning Yorkshire coast can be reached in around an hour by car so Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby are all within striking distance, as is Flamborough Head and RSPB Bempton Cliffs offers spectacular clifftop birdwatching with half a million birds occupying the site over the Summer months including Gannet, Guillemot, Puffin and even Barn Owl.

Last but certainly not least, take the opportunity to enjoy a day at the races. The John Smiths Cup Meeting on Friday 14th & Saturday 15th July 2023 is a key event in the York racing calendar. The Friday highlight is the William Hill Summer Stakes, with events culminating on Saturday with the John Smiths Cup, where the field will be aiming to take the unique Wedgwood trophy.
